![]() Just walk along the water on the sidewalk (on King's right) and you will be walking literally right under the Cherry Trees. YOU ARE ON THE TIDAL BASIN.yay! He is looking right at it. As you see his GIANT commanding statue, you will also notice the water just past him. ![]() Once finished, cross the street, and follow the signs to the Martin Luther King monument (don't miss this!). There is a big snack area (outdoor cafe) and its a nice spot to grab a drink or dessert and take a rest. If you walk around that area, you will find paths that take you onto a somewhat busy street (Independence Ave). This area is wooded and feels like a park, so its harder to see while among the trees. Afterwards, follow that same path back to Lincoln and on Lincoln's RIGHT, you will find that the same path leads you over to the Korean Memorial.you're still on Lincoln's right (It is a mix of armed services men, 7' tall, wearing rain ponchos, walking among "rice paddies"). ![]() To Lincoln's left, you follow a path over to the Vietnam Wall. After checking it out, keep walking toward Lincoln's Memorial (I like to spend time there). Starting at the giant Washington Monument you walk along the Reflecting Pool and come across the WWII memorial. ![]() Print a page from online if you want to be prepared ahead of time and then grab real maps while you're there. But, if you walk the National Mall, I'll give you my steps: First, get your hands on a map of The Mall. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll around the water and admire the beauty of the cherry blossoms, and take in the peaceful and serene atmosphere. While the Tidal Basin can be crowded during cherry blossom season, the experience is still worth it. Visitors can take pictures of the trees and the Tidal Basin from different angles, and capture the beauty of the cherry blossoms against the backdrop of famous landmarks like the Jefferson Memorial and the Washington Monument. There are also many photo opportunities during cherry blossom season. Visitors can enjoy the scenery and take in the fresh air while surrounded by the natural beauty of the cherry blossom trees. Walking or biking around the Tidal Basin is a popular activity during cherry blossom season. The trees are in full bloom with delicate pink and white petals, creating a stunning contrast against the blue sky and water of the Tidal Basin. Visiting the Tidal Basin during cherry blossom season is a must-see experience. The cherry blossom season typically occurs in the springtime and is a spectacular display of nature's beauty. The main image above is with a blue flavor, but I was also very pleased with a less realistic but still very emotive “gold” version.The Tidal Basin is a body of water in Washington DC that is surrounded by beautiful cherry blossom trees. I also used a special filter that reduces reflections to give much clearer colors but can also enhance certain colors depending on its orientation. So, the tripod is critical to avoid camera shake. The key is to make the aperture (the opening in the lens) as small as you can as that increases the depth of focus, but it also increases the length of time the shutter must be open to capture enough light, in this case up to 1/2 second. There is one complication with this type of framed image – there is a tremendous distance gap between the closest blossoms and the distant monument, and it is hard to get both in focus at the same time. Without that piece of the jigsaw, the blossoms would be much darker and less vibrant against the brightly lit white monument. The trees are natural things, of course, and so a favored spot one year, may not be great the following year, but this particular location met two criteria – the blossoms framed the Jefferson Memorial and, critically, the sun would start to illuminate them as it rose in the sky. ![]() This first image, which has been licensed to magazines, websites and advertising companies almost 2000 times was taken shortly after sunrise on a perfect day with no wind to disturb the surface of the Tidal Basin.īut finding the right position, getting your tripod into position and hoping that the conditions will favor you are all part of the story. If there is one secret to getting some good photographs of the Cherry Blossoms in DC, it is to be there before dawn! The traffic is relatively low, some parking will be available, and the crowds (apart from other photographers) will be minimal. If you are in reach of Washington DC, I understand the peak display will be March 22-25 in 2022. Getting there is not that easy, especially during the day, but with some dedication I was able to get some photographs that I am proud of. I was lucky to live about 30 miles from Washington DC and the world-famous Cherry Blossom Festival held there every year was a favorite of mine. Although it perhaps doesn’t feel like it, Spring will certainly be making its appearance soon with the opening of those delightful Cherry Blossoms. ![]()
